Rav Berg demystifies Kabbalah for modern life as practical technology for the soul. He maps consciousness from ego's reactive "Effect" world to Creator's proactive "Cause" realm using the Tree of Life (comprised of 10 Sefirot, or divine emanations) to describe the underlying framework of the universe and human consciousness.

Structured around 13 principles like Certainty, Sharing, and Unity, it offers tools to transcend ego, embrace obstacles as growth, and shift reality through positive thought sharing the spark of Light.

"13 Rules of the Game":

  1. Don't just believe what you read; test it through personal experience.
  2. Recognize the two basic realities: the physical world and the spiritual dimension.
  3. Understand that true desires like love and joy come from spiritual Light.
  4. See life's purpose as a spiritual shift from being reactive to proactive.
  5. Believe that transformation connects you to the spiritual realm.
  6. Avoid blaming others for your circumstances.
  7. Embrace the idea that resisting reactive impulses creates lasting light.
  8. Understand that while reactive behavior can create temporary light, it ultimately leads to darkness.
  9. View obstacles as chances to connect with the Light.
  10. Believe that bigger obstacles offer greater potential for Light.
  11. When facing challenges, have certainty that the Light is always present.
  12. Recognize that internal change can be facilitated through the power of Hebrew letters.
  13. Understand that negative traits observed in others reflect your own, and self-improvement is key to changing others.

What you can get from reading it

  • Shift from living in the "Effect" world (the physical reality where we react to circumstances from a place of ego and selfishness) to the "Cause" realm (the spiritual dimension of the Creator's light, where proactive, selfless actions generate positive change).
  • Fundamental map that describes the structure of both the universe and the human soul/consciousness, learning how divine energy flows into our physical world and how humans can use this system for spiritual ascent.
  • Introduction to Tikkun, or the unique correction(s) your soul incarnates to make in this lifetime — identifying recurring challenges/patterns reveals your tikkun, correcting through conscious, selfless action (sharing) fulfills the spiritual correction.

About the author

Philip Berg, known as Rav Berg, was born in New York to spiritual scholars, ordained rabbi at Torah VaDaat, then worked in business before studying under Kabbalist Rav Yehuda Brandwein in Israel, inheriting The Kabbalah Centre directorship in 1969. With wife Karen, he expanded it globally, authoring dozens of books to make Kabbalah accessible to non-Jews via practical tools. He popularized the wisdom until his death in 2013, training thousands including celebrities.

The book is intentionally written to be accessible and non-dogmatic, positioning the ancient wisdom as a practical, secular "technology" for the soul that can be used by anyoneregardless of their specific religious background. The book and the Kabbalah Centre's teachings emphasize the universal applicability of these tools for personal growth and transformation.
