Imagine yourself a year from now, having received everything you desire and embodying the self-image you imagine. What does life look like? How do you feel?
This is about imagining your future self and describing that reality as if it’s happening now. You can do it in the form of scripting (a journal entry detailing everything you can imagine) or as a letter from your future self to your present day self (dear Me). Most importantly, it’s to be written in present tense as your future self, detailing what your life looks like now and how it feels, and perhaps even reflecting on what the past year was like as you evolved into this chapter of life.
Scripting is just as much about the imaginative picture you create in your mind and put on paper, as it is about the somatic experience you feel within your body as you write it. Paint the picture with descriptive words, but also infuse your language with the emotions and sensations you imagine yourself to feel when life looks this way. This is important for 2 reasons:
Turn to a new page in your journal and date it a year from today. Then close your eyes and take a few deep breaths as you begin to embody your future self, transporting yourself into that future reality. Once you feel it, start to write it as that version of you already living that experience!
Write in the present (or past) tense detailing what life looks like, how you feel, and/or reflecting on the past year. You can write about a specific thing you once desired and now have, or an experience you’d always wished for that came to fruition, or perhaps the self-image you’ve come to embody.
Inject the letter with as much emotion as possible, and give yourself permission to feel those emotions as you write. This will allow your mind and body to digest and validate the experience(s) as if you’re living them now. Your emotion behind the ‘thing’ you desire is your ‘why’ for wanting this experience. By connecting your imagination with that emotion, you are beginning to subconsciously program yourself to align with the frequency of that experience.
*Be as specific as you can (💡) – the vagueness of our desires often leave, well, a lot to be desired. For example, saying you are successful leaves a lot of room for interpretation. We all define success drastically differently, and rather than assume you or the universe knows what you mean, spell it out. Script the scene, so to speak. Spend the time sussing out the specifics of what that reality looks and feels like to you, specifically, in your unique vision. The more you detail it, the more you can embody it.
Here are some ideas to consider scripting about:
As you write, take moments to check-in with yourself to see how your body responds to the reality that’s forming on paper. If anything doesn’t sit well, rewrite it! Sometimes our imagination can take off in directions we didn’t see coming – for better or worse – so feel free to pivot if something feels off, or explore further if suddenly this new picture is intriguing. Consider the following:
Reread the journal entry/letter as often as possible to help you embody your future self.
