Below are two methods for practicing Stream of Consciousness. Pick whichever resonates with you, or experiment with both, and practice daily if possible.
Set a timer for 10 minutes and write without stopping. Don't overthink or second guess what comes to mind, just let your subconscious write through you, letting the words flow out. Grant yourself full freedom of expression without shying away from how you’re feeling physically, emotionally, or mentally; and without judgment for what ultimately lands on the page.
Based on Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way — write a minimum of 3 pages in your journal each morning, preferably within 45 minutes of waking. You can free-write or use a prompt to help focus your attention for the day. Write as aimlessly or as thoughtfully as you like about anything that comes to mind — a worry, a joy, your plan for the day, your dreams from the night before, how you’re feeling, etc. Just continue writing until 3 full pages are complete, and let it take as long as it needs. This helps you reach a state of creative flow, cleansing your mind of the clutter and pushing past your surface level thoughts to reach the deeper energies swirling within you. Ultimately connecting to a more authentic sense of self.
Optionally, after completing either method, consider reading what you wrote — not to judge or over-analyze, but to offer clarity on your experience. Alternatively, consider safely burning the journal entry or tearing it up and tossing it in the trash to help release the energies further.
A freeform journaling practice that streams consciousness in two ways. First, for the thoughts swirling round and round in your mind, this practice can serve as an expression of your consciousness — from mind to journal page — a release, a purge, a cleanse. This in turn creates space for new streams of consciousness to flow in, serving as a connection from the universe to you — a way to receive clarity, new ideas, new perspectives. A channel to creative flow.
By setting a time or page minimum, you push yourself to:
Imagine it like sipping your morning cappuccino — it's about getting past the foam each day to access the richness of flavors mingling under the surface. You may just be surprised by what lands on the page.
Journaling has no rules — write in any format that feels good to you, whether it be full sentences, bullet points, a single word, doodles, lyrics, poetry, or a letter.
