Cognition Pairs

Francine Shapiro, Ph.D., who developed EMDR, outlined examples of negative & positive cognitions (40 pairs) used in the therapy process. She grouped these beliefs into four core domains to help clients identify how past experiences shape the way they see themselves, and to define more adaptive beliefs they want to strengthen:

  1. Responsibility / Defectiveness: self-worth & shame — the feeling that "I am the problem"
  2. Responsibility / Actions: past behaviors or the feeling that "I should have known better"
  3. Safety / Vulnerability: inability to trust oneself or others and the persistent feeling of being in danger
  4. Power / Control / Choice: feelings of helplessness, weakness, or being trapped
