Rebirthing is a specific therapeutic method that uses Circular Breathing (or Conscious Connected Breathing) as its technique — a continuous, uninterrupted loop of breath — to access memories, emotions, and heal trauma. It should be practiced alongside a trained facilitator/therapist, with sessions typically lasting about 60-90 minutes.
If you wish to try a modified version for beginners, try this 20 Connected Breaths practice or listen to this guided re-birthing meditation, or use the steps below:
Developed by Leonard Orr in the 1970s, Rebirthing Breathwork uses Conscious Connected Breathing to help surface suppressed emotions and unresolved trauma held in the body and subconscious. Practitioners report that sessions can bring up material associated with early childhood, birth, or prenatal themes. Some facilitators also integrate methods drawn from Psychodynamic Therapy, such as inner-child dialogue or parts work, to help process what arises.
Continuous circular breathing without pauses increases oxygenation, lowers CO2, and can trigger release of deep emotional tension.
