Rebirthing is a specific therapeutic method that uses Circular Breathing (or Conscious Connected Breathing) as its technique — a continuous, uninterrupted loop of breath — to access memories, emotions, and heal trauma. It should be practiced alongside a trained facilitator/therapist, with sessions typically lasting about 60-90 minutes.

If you wish to try a modified version for beginners, try this 20 Connected Breaths practice or listen to this guided re-birthing meditation, or use the steps below:

  1. Lie down comfortably on your back in a safe, quiet environment.
  2. Set an intention: identify emotional or mental blocks to address.
  3. Conscious Connected Breathing (Circular Breathing):
    1. Inhale: Take a full, deep inhale through the nose.
    2. Exhale: Relaxedly exhale, allowing the breath to release softly, ideally also through the nose.
    3. No Pauses: The key is to keep the breath "connected" — as soon as the inhale ends, the exhale begins, and vice versa, creating a seamless, circular rhythm without gaps.
    4. Relaxed Technique: While deep, the breathing should be relaxed rather than forced or quick, focusing on a continuous flow of energy.
  4. Integration and Release: As the body breathes, past emotions or memories may arise, which are to be observed and released rather than repressed.
  5. Closing: The session concludes with a period of relaxation and integration to rest and reflect.

  • Leonard Orr describes the Rebirthing technique (note: he is being translated in Spanish throughout)

Developed by Leonard Orr in the 1970s, Rebirthing Breathwork uses Conscious Connected Breathing to help surface suppressed emotions and unresolved trauma held in the body and subconscious. Practitioners report that sessions can bring up material associated with early childhood, birth, or prenatal themes. Some facilitators also integrate methods drawn from Psychodynamic Therapy, such as inner-child dialogue or parts work, to help process what arises.

PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSE

Continuous circular breathing without pauses increases oxygenation, lowers CO2, and can trigger release of deep emotional tension.

Body

  • Releases physical tension

  • Supports relaxation & energy flow

Energetics

  • Facilitates emotional release & catharsis
  • Encourages self-awareness & integration
  • Promotes mental clarity
  • Rebirthing should be practiced alongside a trained facilitator/therapist, especially for beginners.
