Process Art emphasizes the experience and creative process of making art rather than the final product or finished piece. It's about nurturing creativity, problem-solving, and emotional expression through hands-on, self-directed art-making. Below are a few (of many) forms in which to try it:

Method 1: Bilateral Drawing

Scribble (or paint) freely with both of your hands to engage both hemispheres of the brain. It can help to process trauma, manage stress, reduce the freeze response, and more.

Method 2: Neurographic Art

Neurographic Art is a more casual approach to NeuroGraphica® (outlined in Method 3) — and perhaps less intimidating for beginners! It's meditative in nature, helping to reduce stress, calm the nervous system, facilitate emotional expression in a safe, nonverbal form, and support intuitive creativity.

Method 3: NeuroGraphica®

Originally created by a psychotherapist as a structured form of art therapy to help clients process emotions, and is believed to help rewire synapsis in the brain. It involves drawing neurographic lines (with a non-repeating trajectory) and basic shapes that carry symbolic meaning (primarily circles, triangles, and squares) before integrating color throughout the drawing.

  • Learn how it differs from Neurographic Art
  • Try these two more common practices:
    • Removing Limitations: starts with a topic, feelings, or a word list, then you'll draw neurographic lines and circles to integrate the issue (instruction begins at 10:30 mark)
    • NeuroTree: uses neurographic lines and shapes to draw a tree in order to explore your roots (past) which symbolize your foundations and resources, the trunk (present) reflects your current path or state, and the crown (future) represents outcomes, aspirations, or “fruits” of your efforts.

Alternatively Choose any medium you like

Simply create for the pleasure of creating, without concern for skill level, and grant your soul a way to express itself through hands-on creative outlets: paint by numbers, draw in a coloring book, doodle, sculpt clay, make pottery, knit, garden, craft, write poetry with pen & paper, cook, bake, squeegee art, circle art, woodworking, beading, blacksmithing, or anything else that piques your interest.

But, if you are less interested in working with your hands, then choose any form of art that helps you freely explore your creative expression: write a blog or a book, start a podcast, create digital art, sing or take voice lessons, act in a play (even a solo play in your own bedroom).

unsure of which to try?

Think back to what you loved doing creatively as a child. Start there.

Or, notice what you admire in other people’s creations (whether in person or online). Let any piqued interest guide you, and then give it a go for the sake of experimentation, trial and error, or perhaps even a process of elimination.

more to explore:

Engaging in a hands-on, mindless creative activity gives your brain the chance to rest, wander, and explore beyond. In the process, your nervous system can naturally re-regulate, reducing stress and even allowing emotions to process.

As you practice this form of expression in which your mind can go offline and your hands stay active, you may experience unexpected breakthroughs — like those "aha" moments in the shower.

  • Imperfection is the name of the game. Use this as a way to freely express your thoughts, emotions, senses, experiences, desires, and frustrations. In doing so, you may discover a path for release, a portal of clarity, a pocket of beauty, or a divine connection that you’ve been searching for.
  • It's also a great practice to use if you feel blocked from expressing yourself.
